Shakespeare uses a diverse form of literary elements in all his plays. I can, however, illustrate several of them. The speech is extremely derogative and suicidal, and he appears to be engaged in a battle within him over whether to live or take his own life. He appears to be weighing his options. Hamlet describes life as rigorous and hard, filled with trials and heartache. He contrasts this with death which he perceives as calm and peaceful without the worries of this life. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the manner in which language and literal techniques have been applied in the hamlet soliloquy essay as well as how they have influenced the entirety of my perception of it, hamlet soliloquy essay.
This is the first metaphor hamlet soliloquy essay the soliloquy, which in my view Hamlet infers to the trials of destiny. Combined, it is evident that Hamlet is debating whether it is better to accept life as it is or to refuse to succumb. In addition to this, Shakespeare has also applied rhetorical questions as a literal technique in the poem. Rhetorical questions in literature challenge the reader while simultaneously channeling his full attention towards the context. In the beginning, hamlet soliloquy essay, Hamlet poses a defining question, one that seems unanswerable to him at that point. Although Hamlet does not take his life, the reader like Hamlet is engaged and similarly does not have the answer to the question.
In an attempt to answer this overriding question, Hamlet presents several other rhetorical questions, which only add to his inner confusion. Shakespeare has also applied synecdoche as a literary tool, which serves to simplify various connections that Hamlet makes in the poem. This allows Hamlet to move from point to point in a disorganized manner. This literary device, through which a small part of an idea is made a representative of the whole, appears severally in the poem. This apparent disintegration of human-like qualities is meant to infer to termination of life altogether, hamlet soliloquy essay. Listing of complaints similarly refers to the greater wrongs of various ideas or institutions such as love, the government, and criminals, while referring to one specific evil.
From the soliloquy, Hamlet has been unable and unwilling to give an answer to his most threatening query: whether to continue living in misery or to take his own life in uncertainty. Hamlet is conceivably among the most complicated personas in English literature. My final sentiment on the hamlet soliloquy essay is that it is confusing on purpose. Lakoff, G. Hyperion was the Greek god of the sun: one of the lesser known Greek gods, he takes almost no role in the mythology accompanying the period, however, that he is god of the sun means he is all seeing and holds power over life and death. A satyr, half-man, half-beast, could not be more different in knowledge or power and so is a forceful contrast. It also has the effect of showing Hamlet to be highly educated, being well versed in Greek mythology. This almost reciprocal imagery between father and mother makes very clear the love between the two, and, in doing so, makes the previous month the more unbelievable. There follows rich imagery. Firstly, the queen is compared to Niobe, a Greek mortal who cried for her children until she her grief turned her to stone.
Then, Hamlet, with his third reference to Greek mythology, reveals more about his character, and his opinion on his uncle. By drawing on the differences between himself and Hercules, Shakespeare shows Hamlet to be a flawed hero. Shakespeare uses this as a further literary flourish: he wishes to portray Hamlet as outraged at such a brash move. Hamlet then refers, for the sixth time in the soliloquy on the rapidity of the marriage. Time is a key theme in this soliloquy: when referring to his mother and uncle, Hamlet speaks, with some vehemence, of the rapidity of their decisions. However, when he refers to his father, there is no such speak. To conclude, this soliloquy is important in three ways. Firstly, it informs the audience as to what has happened in the past. Secondly, it shows the audience what Hamlet thinks on these issues.

Could I not plunge straight into revenge Rather than procrastinating for days on end? Or was I seeking refuge in the cold lap of Death? Or was I waiting to be kissed by Ophelia? Was I growing coward within While feigning to be brave without?! Shakespeare has rightly shown Hamlet, Prince of Denmark yet a scholar from head to feet ,to procrastinate.
But, Hamlet himself was not at all aware of this drawback. He went on weighing he pros and cons of wreaking a revenge on his uncle. But he was not at all sure of the right method for doing so. And Shakespeare in a brilliant creative style has brought the hums and haws of Hamlet to the fore. His lines are imbued with the Elizabethan poeticism, imagery and flourish. He weds emotion to imagery, thought to poetry. Hence, his soliloquies defy oblivion for ages on end. He used to write plays for theatre companies and hence much professionalism was seen in is plays. But through the veneer of all such professionalism, Shakespeare preached the Universal Truth through is creations.
Again, we all know , especially through the medieval Morality Plays that in mind itself the evil and the good play tug-of-war. That very technique is followed by this master playwright when he pens a soliloquy. While working on this famous soliloquy , I tried my best to keep the original context and style intact. I tried to write following the Elizabethan diction minutely. However, my lines are not all in iambic pentameter. There are variations of iambic metrical form. Frankly speaking, my creative talent in comparison to Shakespeare is fractionally small.
Naturally, when I took up the famous soliloquy of Hamlet for rewriting , I felt extremely nervous. How can I write it in my own way, keeping the style, diction , mood strictly Elizabethan? But, later on, employing my confidence I began to write and managed to do it somewhat satisfactorily. A bit complacent I may sound, but actually I felt so. But, I have plunged into the heart of the Prince of Denmark and taken out a few trepidations he was afraid to disclose even in the much-uttered soliloquies! His own procrastination has been admitted brazen-facedly! Has he ever done anywhere in the play so honestly? In this rewritten soliloquy he speaks out the truth without any pretension, any feigned façade as such!
He speaks of wreaking a revenge on his uncle and stripping his mother of her pretended immaculateness in front of all! If he had had done so, it would have been a valorous act!! Therein lies the success of these rewritten lines. While rewriting these lines , I had an idea at the back of my mind :should I able to do justice to the protagonist of this play? Here, there is no madness in Hamlet, rather we see a method in that. Here, he is self-analytical and over-courageous, which he dreamt to be , but actually he was not! Here Hamlet wears his heart upon his sleeves , speaks the truth from the bottom of his heart. Here Hamlet is shown o be the man of action rather than inaction.
Here he does not contemplate only but keeps n giving concrete shapes to his suppressed wishes. I have employed a direct narrative technique, a direct questioning technique and have deliberately avoided symbols and images. I could have made use of images but the attention of the reader could have been veered from the protagonist to the stylistics or poetical charm. Here, Hamlet is to-the-point and direct. I had a chance to think in a creative way while rewriting these lines. I have brought in occasional rhymed lines to retain the characteristic charm of the Elizabethan era.
